Canadian bassist Adam Tanner has played in many different styles and environments over his professional and semi-professional career. His latest venture is Zen Beer: The Solo Bass project, and his debut CD "Grand Unified Chaos" was released last year.

"Well, it's a solo bass album. That might cause people to immediately categorize it or perhaps even dismiss it, but I don't think that it's like your everyday solo bass album. The focus was much more on improvised composition than on chops. So, in a nutshell... expect a solo bass album that doesn't sound like a solo bass album. Could I possibly be any more vague than that?"

Adam uses looping pedals to layer the parts, which are all done on the bass only, with just some synth and percussion parts to spice it up a bit. On one tune, "Duel at Dawn", Dean Watson joins Adam on guitar. The rest of the album is pure and honest bass playing.
Adam has a lot of interesting basses, but the majority of the album was recorded using the custom JAF Minuteman II 6-string bass that Al has built for him.

"That bass sounds just incredible and I can't say enough good things about it!"

This debut CD represents only the beginning of the journey for the Zen Beer project, with more live shows and recordings to come in the near future. The concept continues to grow, evolve and forge its own path in so doing.
